Gu Family History 古家史

Shanxi

Shanxi is indeed an important origin and migration stop for the Gu surname. The progenitor of the Gu clan was Gu Gong Danfu (King Tai of Zhou), whose descendants lived in Daizhou (present-day Daixian County, Shanxi Province) during the Northern Wei Dynasty. Because Xin'an Prefecture was established there, the Gu clan adopted "Xin'an" as their ancestral hall name and became a prominent family in the area.

Gugong Danfu—bearing the surname Ji and the personal name Dan (also known as King Tai of Zhou)—was a native of Bin (modern-day Xunyi, Shaanxi). He was a leader of the ancient Zhou clan, a ruler holding the title of *Xibo* (Lord of the West), the grandfather of King Wen of Zhou, and a founding figure of the Zhou Dynasty. Inscriptions on the *Wu Wang Zheng Shang Gui* (a ritual bronze vessel from the time of King Wu’s campaign against the Shang) refer to him as "Duke Tan. "Calculations indicate that Gugong Danfu was the 17th-generation descendant of the Yellow Emperor (Xuanyuan) and the 12th-generation descendant of Houji, the progenitor of the Zhou people. In the history of the Zhou people's development, he was a pivotal figure who carried forward the great achievements of Houji and Gongliu while paving the way for the flourishing eras of King Wen and King Wu; he was a statesman, reformer, and military strategist of great vision, as well as a renowned and virtuous ruler in history.

During the Yuanhe era of Emperor Xianzong of Tang (806-820), Gu Yunying (also known as Gu Nianwu), an ancestor of the Gu clan who had lived in Linfen, Shanxi (formerly Pingyang Prefecture), served as the Tongpan (assistant prefect) of Hongzhou. He later moved to Nanchang, Jiangxi, becoming the first ancestor of the Hakka Gu clan to settle in southern Jiangxi. This migration route established Shanxi's historical status as an early base for the Gu clan's propagation and an important transit point for their subsequent southward migration.
