Gu Family History 古家史

Gu Clan in Hawaii

The Gu clan in Hawaii is historically represented by the Nazhou Gu clan, specifically through early immigrants like Gu Chuan Pin, who settled in the islands and whose family history is tied to significant political and social changes in both Hawaii and China.

Family records, such as the Gu Jiapu, were often damaged or hidden during periods of conflict, including the Cultural Revolution, but descendants have worked to preserve their lineage and reconnect with relatives in China.

Key aspects of the Gu clan's presence in Hawaii include:

Early Migration: Gu Chuan Pin was one of the first immigrants from the Nazhou Gu clan to settle in Hawaii, establishing a family of twelve children and influencing local Chinese community dynamics.

Genealogical Preservation: The Nazhou Gu Clan ancestral records were partially lost or torn out to protect them during wartime and political turmoil; subsequent generations have worked to reconstruct and verify these lineages.

Family Connections: The clan has maintained ties with other prominent Chinese families in Hawaii, such as the Chock and Huang clans, through intermarriage and shared historical experiences.

Gu Kwan Gei 古羣基. aka Gu King Akana is an example of a Gu family member who migrated to Hawaii. He was born in Najau in 1872 and moved to Hawaii in 1893. He worked in Honolulu in a hotel, married and fathered a family. Today, his descendants live in Hawaii, California  and other states. This includes the founder of this website.

Modern Legacy: Descendants continue to research their heritage, with efforts documented in works like Thank You Father by Margaret Gu Chock, highlighting the family's journey and contributions to Hawaiian-Chinese history.

For context, the national total for the Gu surname has grown rapidly:

Census Year       US Bearers       Rank          Per 100K

Based on the data from mynamestats.com (US Census Bureau), here are the states with the highest concentrations of the Gu surname beyond California:

State                Bearers          Per 100K          Percentile

Smaller but notable concentrations also appear in Oregon, Texas, Florida, and Hawaii, though at lower per-capita rates.
